Cyclades
When people come to Greece, they come for the islands. Here is a quick run-down on the main islands. Ios is the main party island for backpackers, Mykonos is one of the most beautiful islands, it is also very gay and very expensive, Naxos is full of people trying to get away from the tourists on the other islands, Paros is a little more low-key than the rest, and Santorini is also very touristy and is popular for its black and red volcanic sand beaches.
Ferries are the best way to get around the Cyclades and many backpackers buy a ticket that allows you to travel from Pireaus to Paros, Naxos and Ios.
Ios
For many backpackers, Ios is the main party island. It's easy to get to by ferry, there are several party-oriented backpackers hostels and loads of bars where you can party through the night.
