Helmsley makes an ideal gateway to the North York Moors National Park. It is a picturesque market town that boasts some top class attractions including Helmsley Castle and – just 5.5km up the road – Rievaulx Abbey. Helmsley’s market takes place each Friday.

This 900-year-old castle was built as a defence against the Scots but didn’t see military action until the Civil War when it was blown in half.

Rievaulx Abbey

The magnificent Rievaulx Abbey is located 5.5km outside Helmley. It was founded around 1132 and became one of England’s most powerful abbeys.
