The Great Plain
The Great Plain
The flat expanse of eastern Hungary is the country's breadbasket. Although a bleak rural region, the Great Plain (also known as the Puszta) is the Hungary that few travellers see, and is home to two major regional cities - Debrecen and Szeged.
Debrecen
Hungary's second largest city was historically the centre of Hungary's livestock trade while later gaining a reputation for its university and commercial accumen. Nowadays, Debrecen is a pleasant city with a mildly sophisticated air, a good selection of pubs and nightlife and some excellent festivals. Don't leave without trying the Debrecen sausage which the city is famous for.
