Transdanubia

If you're travelling overland from Austria, Croatia or Slovenia, you'll pass through the Transdanubia (Dunántúl) region of western Hungary. This region surrounding Lake Balaton is home to charming villages, and fascinating towns and cities such as Gyõr, Pécs and Sopron.

Gyor

From a distance, Gyõr is an ugly industrial city, however the central area is a beautiful cluster of historic buildings including a cathedral and a 16th century castle.

Coming & Going

Gyõr is well served by both bus and rail lines with the train and bus stations conveniently situated next to each other, south of the centre. Trains from Budapest depart from both Déli and Keleti stations.

Koszeg

This small town near the Austrian border boasts one of Hungary's prettiest town centres plus a small castle and plenty of Austrian tourists.

Coming & Going

To reach Kõszeg from Sopron, you'll have to change trains at Szombathely. There are only a few trains a day so it is worthwhile noting the departure times when you arrive so you know when to get to the station to leave.

Pécs

This southern city has plenty to keep you busy including some excellent museums, beautiful Islamic architecture, a big market and a vibrant atmosphere with excellent cafés and great nightlife.

Coming & Going

Buses operate to most places in the country although the train is more useful if you're heading to Budapest (Déli station) or Zagreb. Both the train and bus stations are located to the south of the centre, although they are about a ten minute walk apart.
