Monasterboice is noted for its ornate high crosses, which are said to be among Ireland's best examples. Unfortunately it is difficult to get to without your own car. Monasterboice, near DroghedaTel (041) 982 2813 Old Mellifont AbbeyThe ruins of Ireland's first Cistercian monastery date from 1142. The abbey's visitor centre has an exhibition of artefacts from the site. Like Monasterboice, the Old Mellifont Abbey is difficult to get to by public transport.
