Coming & going

BUS & COACH

National Express (tel 0870 580 8080) runs buses from Leeds to most major British destinations including Birmingham, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and York.

 

Megabus have cheap buses from Leeds to London and Manchester with fares starting at £1 (plus 50p booking fee). The Leeds Megabus stop is bus stop K14 on Kirkgate, opposite Harper Street between Pine Court and the Railway Bridge..

TRAIN

Leeds is well served by trains with services run by Northern going to Manchester and destinations throughout Yorkshire including Harrogate, Hull and York. Northern also runs trains from Leeds on the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway. CrossCountry Trains go north to Scotland, as well as to Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and York. First TransPennine Express trains go to Hull, Manchester (Piccadilly), Newcastle and Scarborough. National Express East Coast has trains to Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield, York and Scotland. Local trains on the West Yorkshire Metro system have frequent services to nearby cities including Bradford.

Local transport

West Yorkshire's Metro transport network (tel (0113) 245 7676) is comprised of buses and trains and is an efficient way to get around Leeds and to other destinations in West Yorkshire such as Bradford and Haworth.

 

The excellent DayRover pass gives you unlimited bus travel in West Yorkshire for £5, unlimited train travel for £5.30 or unlimited bus and train travel for £6.20. It is only valid after 9.30am on weekdays or all day on weekends.

Hostel accommodation

There are no hostels – not even cheap Formule 1-style hotels – in Leeds and the closest affordable accommodation is in Haworth or York. If you want to stay in Leeds, try the B&Bs on Cardigan Road in Headingly (a 20-minute bus ride into the suburbs).

Sightseeing, museums & tourist attractions

Armley Mills – Leeds Industrial Museum

This industrial museum is housed inside what was once the world's largest woollen mill. The museum has exhibits on the city's industrial heritage with displays on engineering and the textile and clothing industries.

The Henry Moore Institute is one of the country's leading art museums devoted to sculpture. It contains four galleries that host a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Royal Armouries Museum

Leeds' top attraction is this excellent museum that houses an unsurpassed collection of arms and armour and also features demonstrations that include jousting tournaments.
