Friesland (Fryslân) & Groningen
The Netherland's northern provinces are rarely visited by foreigners and those that do make it up here find a region much different to the rest of the country. The province of Friesland (Fryslân), in particular, is unique with its own language - Frysk (Frisian).
Leeuwarden
The main city in Friesland may be a little disappointing after visiting some of the historic cities further south. However Leeuwarden is a great place to discover Frisian culture, particularly in the Fries Museum: (nothing to do with McDonalds!).

Groningen
This ancient trading centre is now a lively city with a beautiful old town and excellent nightlife. The city is also the place to go to experience the Dutch pastime of wadlopen - walking in mud during low tide. Wadlopen, however can be dangerous and it's advisable to book an excursion through the tourist office - you may need to book well in advance in the May and August holiday periods.
