Gotland

This island is located in the middle of the Baltic Sea, 90km from the Swedish mainland and 130km from the Baltic States. Less than 60,000 people live here and it is a popular destination with Swedes who enjoy the rural scenery.

Visby

Gotland's capital is the only sizable town on the island. Visby is a well-preserved medieval Haseantic port and it is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Walls dating from medieval times still surround this charming town of winding cobblestone lanes.

Coming & Going

Visby is well connected to the mainland with frequent air and ferry services.

Visby's small airport is well served by flights to Stockholm's Arlanda, Bromma and Skavsta airports.

Destination Gotland (website www.destinationgotland.se; tel (0498) 20 10 20) ferries depart from Nynäshamn near Stockholm. Nynäshamn is served by Stockholm's suburban train network and also by buses, which connect with the ferry service. You can sometimes save money if you buy a combination bus/ferry or train/ferry ticket.

Beyond Visby

Gotland is an ideal cycling destination and there are several places in Visby where you can rent bikes. The less energetic will find the island's bus service an ideal way to explore the island.

There are no real must-see attractions outside Visby apart from the picturesque countryside and almost 100 medieval churches that dot the island.
