Notranjska

Notranjska, or Inner Carniola, is bypassed by most travellers who catch a glimpse of the province from a train or bus window while travelling en route between Ljubljana and Italy. The region is best known for its karst caves, particularly the Postojna cave, which is the world's largest.

Postojna

Most travellers come to this small town to see the massive Postojna cave, just outside town. The other main attraction is Predjama castle, 9km northwest of Postojna.

Coming & Going

Postojna enjoys good transport connections. It is only 40 minutes from Ljubljana making it close enough to visit as a day trip.

The town is on the main train line between Ljubljana and Italy and there are very frequent trains (at least one every hour) between Postojna and Ljubljana and also trains from Koper.

Buses run even more frequently with one stopping around every half hour. Most buses that stop here are those that run between Ljubljana and the coast, but there are also several buses a day to Maribor and other destinations east of the capital. International buses run from Postojna to Porec, Rijeka and Zagreb in Croatia and to Trieste in Italy.

Sights

Postojna Cave

The world's largest cave is one of Slovenia's biggest attractions, however it receives an incredibly large number of visitors and the tours are so well organised that they detract from the experience. Visitors are taken on a 1½ hour tour that allows you to see more than 5.5km of the cave - 4km of this is aboard a minature train that runs through the cave. Many travellers prefer the smaller, but more impressive, Škocjan Caves near Divaca in Primorska.

Predjama Castle

Postojna's other attraction is Predjama castle. This castle dates from the 13th century and occupies an imposing position perched high upon a cliff face. However it is virtually impossible to reach by public transport and visiting it is only really an option if you have access to a car.
