ŠtajerskaFew travellers visit Slovenia's largest province, which occupies much of eastern Slovenia. The main attractions in Štajerska are Maribor, Slovenia's second-largest city, and Ptuj, one of its oldest towns. MariborSlovenia's second largest city is a small and attractive place that features a charming and well preserved old town. For centuries Maribor has been the centre of Slovenia's wine trade and the surrounding region is covered with vineyards. It is a pleasant city and it's a great place to experience Slovene life, but not many backpackers visit Maribor. There are around 20 trains a day between Maribor and Ljubljana. Maribor is also well served with trains across the border into Austria with services to Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna. The bus service is even better than the train and there are buses to most places in Slovenia and buses also serve the following international destinations: Budapest and Lenti, Hungary; Frankfurt and Stuttgart, Germany; Graz, Austria and Varaždin and Zagreb in Croatia. Local TransportMaribor has a good local bus sytem (website www.certus.si) with most buses terminating at the bus terminal a short distance north of the train station. Bus 3 runs between the train station and the youth hostel. A single ticket costs €1 if you buy it on the bus, but is cheapest to buy a two, six, 10 or 20 ride ticket in advance from a tobaconnist shop. A two-ride ticket costs €1.38, a six ride ticket costs €3.92, a 10-ride ticket costs €6.38 and a 20-ride ticket is €12.48. SightsGrajski TrgGrajski Trg is the best place to begin exploring Maribor. This medieval square near the castle has some great cafés where you can experience local café culture. Maribor Art Gallery (Umetnostna Galerija Maribor)This small art museum features over 2000 works by various artists. The castle's highlights inclde an elaborate Baroque stairway and the Knight's Hall, which is the castle's main room that features a ceiling painted by Jozef Gebler. The Maribor Regional Museum is located within the castle. The museum focuses on World War II history, but also has exhibits on other events of the 20th century. About one hundred 250ml bottles are produced from this vine each year. PtujThis small town an hour from Maribor has a rich history that dates from Roman times. It boasts a castle and a medieval old town and is best known for its unique carnival that takes place each year in early February. There are trains every hour or two between Ptuj and Maribor and slightly less frequent trains to Ljubljana. SightsDominican MonasteryThis former monastery dates from 1226 and is now home to the Ptuj Museum's achaeological exhibits that feature a notable collection of Roman artefacts. Muzejski trg 1, PtujMinorite MonasteryLocated at the eastern edge of the old town, the Minorite Monastery dates from the 13th century. The monastery features a gothic church, a library and a summer refectory with painted ceiling panels. Minoritski trg, PtujOrpheus MonumentThis five-metre-tall marble tombstone dates from the second century. The Roman tombstone features scenes from the myth of Orpheus carved into it. Slovenski trg, PtujPrevost's Church of St GeorgeThis church on the eastern edge of Ptuj's old town has undergone numerous additions over more than 10 centuries and features art from the 15th century. Slomškova ulica, PtujPtuj CastleA fortress was originally built on this site by the Romans although the present castle dates from the 12th century with many additions made up to the 18th century. There is a museum inside the castle with exhibits that include a large collection of Turkerie portraits and period rooms including the imposing Knights' Hall.
