HampshirePortsmouth & SouthseaPortsmouth is best known for its naval history and its historic seafront is home to several of the Royal Navy's grand old ships including Henry VIII's Mary Rose, Admiral Nelson's HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. There are frequent train services to London and also along the coast to Brighton and Southampton. Buses terminate at the Hard Interchange, which is located adjacent Portsmouth Harbour train station. Every half hour Hovertravel (website www.hovertravel.co.uk) hovercrafts go between Southsea Hoverport and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The trip takes around 10 minutes and the return fare is £9.70. Local TransportSolent Transport (website www.solent-transport.org.uk) co-ordinates the south Hampshire's public transport, which includes buses operated by First (website www.firsthampshire.co.uk) and Stagecoach (website www.stagecoachbuses.co.uk) and a train network. A tram network is planned for the future. The Solent Travelcard (website www.solent-travelcard.org.uk) is good for unlimited travel on all bus routes across southern Hampshire, including Portsmouth and Southampton. This pass costs £5 a day or £20 a week. The Gosport ferry (tel (023) 9252 4551; website www.gosportferry.co.uk) connects Portsmouth Harbour station with Gosport on the opposite side of the harbour. The ferry runs every 7½ to 15 minutes and is the easiest way to get to Gosport. The Mary Rose lay in its watery grave for hundreds of years before being found by divers and raised in front of a TV audience in 1982. There is an adjoining museum that features over 1200 items taken from the wreck and the museum's Bonaventure Gallery has hands-on exhibits that give you an idea of life aboard the Mary Rose in Tudor England. The Explorer ticket is a great value pass that gives you one day unlimited bus travel in Wiltshire and parts of Dorset and Hampshire for just £6. This pass will take you as far as Bristol, Bath, Bournemouth and Winchester and is ideal if you're making a day trip into the countryside or if you want to go to Bath or Bristol with a stop en route. FERRYRed Funnel (website www.redfunnel.co.uk) ferries sail between Southampton and Cowes on the Isle of Wight. There are two ferry services: the fast ferry to West Cowes and the slower car ferry to East Cowes. A day return on either ferry costs £11 or £14 including a Rover bus ticket on the island. TRAINSouth West Trains (website www.swtrains.co.uk) has trains from Southampton to Brighton, Bristol, London (Waterloo station) and Weymouth. The station is on Blechynden Terrace west of the centre . SightsGod's House Tower Museum of ArchaeologyThis 13th century gatehouse originally stood at the southeast corner of the medieval city walls and now houses the city's museum of archaeology. One of the museum's highlights is its Titanic gallery, which portrays this famous ship with artefacts and stories from local people who were affected by the tragedy.
