Castilian Spanish

Castilian Spanish, known simply as Spanish outside Spain, is the country's major language. It is the first language in most parts of the country including the capital, Madrid and its surrounding region and the historic cities of Andalucía.

Spanish is useful in other parts of Spain where Basque, Catalan or Galician is spoken. It is spoken alongside Catalan in Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic Islands and is more widely spoken than Basque in the Basque Country and Navarra.
