The home of the Beatles is one of the most popular northwestern cities with backpackers. It is a little run down with a lot of boarded up buildings but it is developing into a vibrant city with excellent – and affordable – nightlife, good shopping and popular attractions.
Liverpool makes a big deal of its musical heritage especially its connection with the Beatles, who originated in the city. There are plenty of Beatles related attractions such as the Beatles Story and walking tours around the band's old haunts.
Other attractions include Albert Dock, a redeveloped dockside area that is home to the Beatles Story, HM Customs & Excise Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool Life and the Tate Liverpool.
