Manchester Airport (tel (0161) 489 3000) is England's busiest airport outside London with flights to all corners of the globe. It is 16km south of the city centre. Trains run into Manchester Piccadilly station every 15 minutes and cost £3.60 (£1.60-3.10 off-peak).
Liverpool Airport is served by several budget airlines and it is close enough to be a viable alternative to Manchester Airport. Terravision (tel (0151) 907 1132) run an express bus service between Liverpool Airport and Manchester city centre (Sackville Stree). The airport bus fare is £6 one-way. Alternatively, Arriva buses 80A and 86A run between the airport and Liverpool South Parkway station which has regular train services to Manchester Oxford Road station.
National Express has frequent coach services to most major destinations including Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Sheffield. Coaches depart from Chorlton Street Coach Station on Chorlton Street in the city centre.
Megabus is a cheap option if you want to travel to Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds or London. Megabus departs opposite the coach station on Chorlton Street. Fares start at £1 (plus 50p booking fee).
Manchester has several stations with most long distance trains stopping in either Piccadilly or Victoria stations. Piccadilly station, east of the city centre, has trains to Birmingham (New Street), Chester, Edinburgh, the Lake District, Leeds, London (Euston) and York. Victoria Station on Victoria Street north of the city centre has trains to Liverpool.
