Prague

Eating & drinking

Prague can be an affordable place to eat and drink although there are also plenty of overpriced eateries which are best avoided. Prices generally drop once you leave the city centre and venture into the suburbs and residential neighbourhoods where tourists rarely venture.

Eating

Prague is no gourmet capital, although it's not too hard to eat cheaply once you venture away from the centre.

Pubs here serve hearty filling fare which goes down well with a few litres of beer.

If you want cheap food in the city centre stick to the fast food joints, or restaurants run by religious organisations such as the hare krishnas. Alternatively check out the markets and stock up on picnic food. The Tesco supermarket at Národní třída 26 (metro Národní třída) is a good option if you're preparing your own food.

Drinking

The Czechs are the world's number one beer drinkers and naturally beer is one of the country's main attractions for backpackers. With more than 8000 pubs in the city, virtually every street in Prague has one.

Generally bars in the old town have much higher prices and cater mainly to tourists while residential neighbourhoods away from the centre have lower prices and a more authentic atmosphere. Some guidebooks attempt to recommend places, however your best bet is to ask a local or the reception staff at your hostel for their recommendations and take it from there.
