StockholmComing & Going
Stockholm is well connected within Scandinavia with frequent bus, ferry and train connections. There is also good value transport to other European destinations with ferries to Estonia and Germany and cheap flights to the UK. AIRFour airports serve Stockholm. Arlanda AirportThe majority of flights use Arlanda Airport (tel (08) 797 6100; website www.lfv.se), which is located 40km north of the city centre. This is easily the larger of Stockholm's airports and it is used by most international and many domestic flights. Arlanda Airport has the best transport connections with buses and trains running into the city centre. Flygbussarna (tel 600 1000; website www.peopletravel.se/en/koncernen/) buses run every 10-15 minutes between Arlanda and Cityterminalen. Tickets cost SEK 89 and the journey takes 40 minutes. The Arlanda Express train (tel (020) 222 224; website www.arlandaexpress.com) takes half as long as the bus, but costs twice as much (SEK 190). The Arlanda Express train runs every 15 minutes. Bromma AirportBromma Airport (website www.lfv.se) is the closest to the city centre and is used mostly for domestic flights. Flygbussarna operates buses between Bromma and Cityterminalen; the return fare is SEK 130. Skavsta AirportTiny Skavsta Airport (tel (0155) 28 04 00; website www.skavsta-air.se) is becoming a popular alternative to the two main airports particularly for budget travellers. Skavsta airport is located near Nyköping, a little over 100km south of Stockholm and Ryanair operates cheap flights between here and London-Stansted Airport. Flygbussarna buses run between Stockholm's Cityterminalen and Skavsta airport. The bus timetable is set up so the buses meet Ryanair flights; the airport bus to Skavsta airport costs SEK 110 and takes 80 minutes. Västerås AirportStockholm's fourth airport is in Västerås (tel (021) 80 56 10; website www.vasterasflygplats.se/english.asp) over 100km east of the city. This airport has flights to Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Oslo as well as two daily flights to London-Stansted. The airport is 6km from the centre of Västerås, which has hourly trains to Stockholm. Local bus 41 runs between the airport and the train station. Flygbussarna run buses between Cityterminalen and Västerås airport; the 75-minute journey costs SEK 130. BUSThere are buses between Stockholm and most destinations in southern Sweden as well as buses to Oslo and Copenhagen. Buses arrive at and depart from Cityterminalen, which is situated near Centralstationen. The main bus companies are: SäfflebussenTel (020) 160 0600Website www.safflebussen.se Svenska BussTel (020) 67 67 67Website www.svenskabuss.se SwebusTel 0200 218218Website www.swebusexpress.se TRAINLike most other big European cities, Stockholm has good rail connections. There are good train services between Stockholm and destinations throughout Sweden, with international services to Narvik, Oslo and Trondheim in Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark. Stockholm's main station is called Centralstationen. The closest station on the tunnelbana network is called T-Centralen. FERRYFerries ply the seas between Stockholm and ports in Estonia, Poland and the UK. If you're arriving in Sweden make sure you stock up on duty free alcohol as this can be very expensive in Sweden. HITCHHIKINGAlthough hitching isn't that popular in Sweden it is better than many guidebooks would have you believe. The E4 is the main highway to Uppsala and north to destinations in northern Sweden. Take a train to Karlberg and hitch at the entrance to Norra Länken or take the tunnelbana to Odenplan and walk around five minutes to where Uppsalavägen joins the motorway. Heading in the opposite direction, the E4 goes to Helsingborg via Norrköping and Jönköping. This is the route you want to take for rides to Gothenburg, Malmö or Copenhagen. Take the tunnelbana to Hornstull and wait at the Liljeholmsbron bridge for a lift. After the bridge, this road becomes the Södertäljevägen (E4). BUG Ride (website http://europe.bugride.com) is our own web-based ride sharing service, it allows travellers to both offer lifts and search for rides throughout Europe. This is a free service which links travellers to drivers - you contact the driver by email when you have found the ride you want. |
