Kungliga Myntkabinettet (Royal Coin Cabinet)

This is an economic museum; not because it's cheap - but because it features exhibits on money and economics. It has an impressive collection that includes both the world's oldest coin and the first banknote (both Swedish).

Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral)

Dating from 1306, this baroque church was once the scene of Swedish coronations. The interior is very impressive and it is home to several important artworks.

Riddarhuset (House of Nobility)

This 17th century building was home to the Swedish parliament until 1865 and features the impressive Great Hall where the coats of arms of Swedish nobility are displayed.

Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace)

The Royal Palace is one of the city's highlights. The palace boasts 608 rooms including state apartments, the Royal Treasury, Royal Chapel, Royal Armoury, an antiquities museum and a museum on the 13th century castle that originally stood at this site. Try to visit during the changing of the guard, which takes place in the outer courtyard; Jun-Aug Mon-Sat 12.10pm, Sun 1.10pm; Sep-May Wed, Sat 12.10pm, Sun 1.10pm.

Postmuseum

In addition to displays of Swedish stamps, this museum has exhibits on the history of the postal service.

Stadshuset (City Hall)

Stockholm's city hall is an imposing building that features the beautiful Golden Hall and the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held each year. There's a great view of Gamla Stan and the city centre from the top of the tower.

This interesting museum has exhibits detailing the history of alcohol.

National Museum

Skansen

The world's first open-air museum is situated in Djurgården and features around 150 buildings from various parts of Sweden that are set up to show how people lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a zoo at Skansen, which has an emphasis on Nordic animals.

Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum is home to the 17th century warship Vasa, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. In addition to the restored ship, the museum features exhibits on life on board the ship, naval history and the salvaging expedition.

Tekniska Museet (Museum of Science and Technology)

There is a huge collection of machines at this museum including Sweden's largest preserved steam engine. The museum features Teknorama, a science centre with interactive exhibits geared towards kids.
