Train travel in the Netherlands

The Dutch train network, operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), has frequent services throughout the country.

Because of the Netherlands' compact size, the longest journey is less than three hours and the big cities of the Randstad region are conveniently located within commuting distance making places like The Hague and Rotterdam a day trip from Amsterdam. InterCity trains run every 15 minutes on these major routes.

If you're planning a day trip, it is much cheaper to buy a day return (dagretour) rather than two one-way tickets. A one-way ticket is enkele reis while a regular return ticket is called a retour.

Dutch railpasses

Eurail and InterRail passes are valid in the Netherlands in addition to the following:

Dagkaart (Day Ticket)

This pass gives you unlimited train travel throughout the Netherlands for one or five days. The 5-Day Ticket is actually five separate Day Tickets purchased at the same time, so there is no requirement for travel on consecutive days.

An additional €5 lets you upgrade to the OV Dagkaart, which also lets you use urban transport, such as buses, trams and the metro in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
