COFFEE HOUSESViennese coffee houses are instrinsically linked with the city and it would be an injustice to visit Vienna without spending time in one. Even more so than their Parisian counterparts, a Viennese café (kaffeehäuser) is an opulent place with a cosy, easy-going ambience where you can spend hours over a single coffee as you catching up on reading newspapers and writing letters. When you buy a drink, you're really paying for the atmosphere which goes some way toward explaining why the coffee here can be so expensive. Alt WienA dank, smoky place where you can also enjoy a coffee or a beer late at night with the arty crowd. 01, Bäckerstraße 9, ViennaU-Bahn Stephansplatz Café CentralTrotsky used to play chess in this traditional but rather expensive coffee house. 10, Herrengasse 14, ViennaU-Bahn Herrengasse Café MuseumAnother famous coffee house which is also a local favourite. 01, Friedrichstraße 6, ViennaU-Bahn Karlsplatz FrauenhuberOne of the city's oldest coffee houses which once counted Beethoven among its regulars. 01, Himmelpfortgasse 6, ViennaU-Bahn Stephansplatz HawelkaIt can sometimes be difficult to find a table in this famous café. The clientele covers a broad cross-section of society and it's especially popular with students. 01, Dorotheergasse 6, ViennaU-Bahn Stephansplatz HEURIGENThese wine taverns have traditionally sold only the latest vintage produced in the adjoining winery, meaning that you have to venture into the outer suburbs to find an authentic heurigen. Many of these genuine heurigen are located to the north-west of the city centre in the Wienerwald region, often near the terminus of a tram or bus route. These include those in Grinzig, Heiligenstadt and Nussdorf. For a more authentic flovour, head to Strebersdorf in the 21st district where you can avoid the tourists. Although they can't really claim to be true heurigen, several stadtheurigen exist in the city centre providing a traditional wine tavern without having to trek out into the suburbs. AugustinerkellerAlthough a bit touristy, this centrally located stadtheurigen is still good fun. 01, Augustinerstraße 1, ViennaU-Bahn Karlsplatz BeethovenhausBeethoven once lived in this large heurigen in Heiligenstadt. 01, Pfarrplatz 3, ViennaTram 38 to Grinzig, then bus 38A EsterházykellerA good value stadtheurigen with a reasonable range of hot and cold snacks. 01, Haarhof 1, ViennaU-Bahn Herrengasse Weinhof WieningerOne of Vienna's least touristy heurigen with good prices and a regular Viennese clientele. 21, Stammersdorfer Straße 78, ViennaTram 31 Zwölf-ApostelkellerAnother centrally located stadtheurigen which is perfect for a good value night out. However it can also get busy meaning that its difficult to find a place to drink in the three levels of this 17th century building. 01, Sonnenfelsgasse 3, ViennaU-Bahn Stephansplatz |
