Eating
If you're preparing your own food you can try the supermarkets in the Importanne Centar beneath the train station or the Konzum supermarket on Ilica near Trg Britanski. There are outdoor fruit markets in Trg Britanski and the square outside the Cathedral in the old town.

Drinking
If you are buying beer in a Croatian supermarket the cashier will probably mutter a mysterious phrase which will have something to do with the bottle deposit. Just do the usual thing and say "I don't speak Croatian" then the cashier will respond with a lengthy explanation of the Croatian bottle deposit system - none of which you will understand.
Anyway here is a short translation.
The cashier will charge an extra fee for the deposit (around 3 kuna), then she will tell you to keep the receipt. Of course you don't understand what she is saying so just nod and say "Da, hvala". When you have quenched your thirst with the amber nectar that the Croatians call "pivo", return to the same store with your empty bottle and receipt.
As you enter the supermarket you will see a bottle deposit counter at the entrance. Give them your bottle and they will give you a ticket which you present inside the supermarket (with the original receipt) when you buy your next load of groceries. The cashier will then take the deposit from your bill.
Easy system, eh? It took me a few beers to work it out.
Zagreb has a good selection of pubs, especially those in the old town which are popular during the summer.
